"In einem anarchistischen Blatt ist an erster Stelle hervorzuheben, dass das Buch eine Geschichte erzählt, die in anarchistischen Kreisen fast gänzlich unbekannt ist, dies aber nicht sein sollte", so Gabriel Kuhn in seiner Rezension in der Zeitschrift "Gai Dao". Kuhn… empfiehlt das Buch auch als Geschenk, nicht nur zur Weihnachtszeit - dem ist absolut zuzustimmen. Bernd Drücke (Graswurzelrevolution) schrieb zum Buch und seinem historischen Hintergrund: Gog, geboren am 7. November 1891, heuerte 1910 als Matrose an und kam schon bald in Kontakt mit anarchistischen Schriften von Leo Tolstoi, Michail Bakunin, Pjotr Kropotkin und Gustav Landauer. Nach drei Weltkriegsjahren meuterte er 1917 und wurde inhaftiert. 1918 beteiligte Gog sich am Matrosenaufstand und gründete im November zusammen mit anderen Anarchist*innen die Kommune am grünen Weg" in Bad Urbach bei Stuttgart. Diese lebensreformerisch-anarchistische Kommune entwickelte sich zu einem Treffpunkt von Nonkonformist*innen. Zu ihren Gästen gehörte auch der 1934 von den Nazis ermordete Anarchist Erich Mühsam, der schon ab 1909 versucht hatte, das von Bürgern und Marxisten gleichermassen verachtete Lumpenproletariat" für die Idee der herrschaftslosen Gesellschaft zu begeistern. Gog wurde Herausgeber und Redakteur der im Frühjahr 1927 gegründeten, legendären Zeitschrift Der Kunde". Der Name dieses anarchistischen, pazifistischen und antifaschistischen Organs beruht auf der rotwelschen Bezeichnung für wandernder Handwerksbursche, Bettler, Landstreicher". Diese etwa viermal im Jahr mit einer Auflage von 1000 erschienene, von Hand zu Hand weitergereichte Zeit- und Streitschrift der Vagabunden" (Untertitel) war die erste Strassenzeitung Europas und verstand sich als Sprachrohr der Bruderschaft der Vagabunden". Gregor Gogs Versuche, die Tippelschwestern und -brüder mit Hilfe des Kunden" anarchosyndikalistisch zu agitieren und zu organisieren fand 1929 einen Höhepunkt. Zu Pfingsten 1929 mobilisierte er erfolgreich mit Hilfe seiner Zeitschrift viele Obdachlose zum ersten Internationalen Vagabundenkongress nach Stuttgart. Allen Strassensperren, Polizeischikanen und der Hetze in den rechten Massenmedien zum Trotz fand der Kongress statt und wurde ein Symbol für eine selbstorganisierte, freiheitlich-sozialistische Vagabundenbewegung. Gog rief den Generalstreik ein Leben lang" aus und erlangte als Bürgerschreck und König der Vagabunden" Bekanntheit in ganz Deutschland. Schwer nachvollziehbar bleibt auch nach Lektüre des Buches, warum er sich nach einer Reise nach Moskau ab 1930 zum autoritären Marxisten wandelte. Der Zeichnerin Bea Davies und dem Autor Patrick Spät ist es mit Der König der Vagabunden" anschaulich gelungen, das abenteuerliche, durch Armut und Hoffnung auf eine freiheitlich-sozialistische Gesellschaft geprägte Leben des wenig bekannten Gregor Gog zugänglich zu machen.
