(Reliure de l'époque.). Première édition. Le nivellement général de la France de 1864 est le premier nivellement homogène fait sur l'ensemble du territoire français. Bourdalouë, directeur des travaux, avait dirigé la brigade française en 1847 des études de l'isthme de Suez. "La précision (du nivellement ) est telle que, par kilomètre, il n'existe pas un écart dépassant 1 mm , et à peine 3 cm d'une extrémité de la France à l'autre". Les trois premiers volumes contiennent les: "Résultats des opérations exécutées pour l'établissement du réseau des lignes de base." Le quatrième des : - "Notes diverses." Suivies des: - "Instructions", contenant 18 circulaires, de 1859 à 1863, de une ou plusieurs pages chacune, totalisant 104 pp. , 2 tableaux et 15 planches dont 6 dépliantes. Ces notes et instructions sont illustrées de lithographies montrant les instruments et les méthodes utilisés. L'une est une grande planche dépliante du "niveau dit Bourdaloue". A la suite on a relié un : "Carnet de l'opérateur". (44) pp. sous couverture imprimée verte. Tel qu'il a été envoyé à tous les opérateurs qui ont participé à ce nivellement. In fine deux très grandes cartes dépliantes, une de France avec le Réseau des lignes de base et un spécimen des cartes du nivellement de détail. Envoi de l'auteur à Mr. Combes, Directeur de l'Ecole des mines, dans les 1er et 4ème volumes. Carte de visite de Bourdalouë jointe.
