Zen Gärten wirken sehr natürlich, a…uf den ersten Blick in manchen Teilen beinahe zufällig. Erik Borja spricht in diesem Zusammenhang von "naturalistischer Landschaftsgestaltung". Anders als bei uns, wo der Garten meist eine Ausdehnung des Wohnbereiches darstellt, gilt in Japan der Bereich des Gartens als eine andere Welt, die keinerlei Bezug zum Wohnbereich hat. Die Natur und nicht die Architektur ist vorherrschend. Hinter der Gartengestaltung im japanischen Stil stehen eine Vielzahl von Symbolen und Metaphern. Steine und Wasser sind die wichtigsten Bestandteile. Dabei können diese Gestaltungselemente auch nur metaphernhaft dargestellt werden: In Trockengärten vertreten geharkte Kiesflächen das Wasser, Bachläufe werden nur durch Kieselsteine versinnbildlicht. Bei den Pflanzen steht im japanischen Garten der Schnitt im Vordergrund. Eine spezielle Schnittechnik resultiert in der charakteristischen Optik von Kiefern und anderen Bäumen und Sträuchern. Anhand einer genauen Erklärung seiner Ateliergärten überträgt Erik Borja den japanischen Zen Garten auf europäische Verhältnisse. Unterscheidungen liegen unter anderem in der Pflanzenwahl. Die Charakteristika aller besprochenen Gartenanlagen sind fotografisch hervorragend eingefangen. Einige Skizzen verdeutlichen die gestalterischen Prinzipien zusätzlich.
