Add to basketFine binding. Condition: Very Good+. Whilst the text in this book appears to be the original 1795 text it is interspersed with 20 illustrations of Lewes. The engravings are mostly dated c1823 they will could have been bound in time after the original publication. There is no index to the illustraitons. Attractive volume in fine…three quarter leather binding, light tan leather corners and spine, banded spine with titles in two panels lettered in gilt, on a maroon and a black leather label, paper covered marbled boards, blind stamped key pattern line detail, this handsome binding is in pristine condition, plain endpapers, very small book binder's label to top of front paste down, no inscriptions, 8vo, engraved frontispiece opposite the title page, following this the preliminaries are not paginated, Dedication to his Royal Highness George Augustus Frederick Prince of Wales by William Lee dated March 1795, on the reverse side of the dedication is a single page of Errata, 555 pages followed by index. (No subscribers list) . The text is foxed but fully readable. Illustrated with 20 Full Page Lithograph Engravings that are in very good condition. The frontispiece engraving is View of the Keep Lewes Castle, drawn amd published by J Rouse Fulham and engraved by C Ingrey. The others are: Mount Harry Hill and the Wall Land from the Keep, Lewes Castle; Saint Mary's Lewes; All Saints Church Lewes; S View of St John's Sub Castro, Lewes; The Old Town Hall Lewes; Remains of West Gate Lewes; Internal Part of West Gate Lewes; The Gatehouse of Lewes Castle; Remains of the Keep of Lewes Castle drawn and published by James Rouse 1823, Saint Peter's Westout Lewes: N. W. Of the Spittal Lewes; S E View of the priory of Saint Pancras Lewes dated 1823; Lewes Priory and Pigeon House; Remains of the Church of Lewes Priory; Remains of the Gatehouse of Lewes Priory; Remains of Saint James's Hospital Lewes; The Church of St John the Baptist, Southover; The Tomb of Gundrad daughter of Wm the Conqueror; The top of the Tomb of Gundrad daughter of Wm the Conqueror. The book is certainly pleasingly illuminated by the illustrations, James Rouse, (1773-1825) , Fulham who published and drew most of the engravings was an accomplished artist who produced many views of countryside and towns in Sussex. In association with his wife he produced Rouse's Scraps of Sussex, drawn and published by James Rouse and engraved by Elizabeth Rouse. This was in the form of an illustrated ten sheet folio sized folder, now very rare. The engravings found in this volume of Ancient and Modern History of Lewes are drawn and published by C Rouse and in most cases the engravikng has been credited to contemporary lithographer, Charles Ingrey. A very unusual find which is both fascinating and memorable, a comprehensive book about historic Lewes - a Sussex Town that remains beautiful and atmospheric.
