Of all the editions of De gli eroici furo-ri Gentile's is the most reliable. It takes into account the careful and accurate studies of Adolfo Wagner and Paul de Lagarde and often it modernizes much of Bruno's archaic spelling and punc-tuation while it remains completely faithful to Bruno's text in all other respects. I have also consulted Paul-Henri Michel's French version of Des fureurs héroïques, published in 1954, and I have frequently made use of this felicitous translation in connection with many of Bruno's more obscure passages. My purpose in this English version of De gli eroici furori, the first since William's translation of 1887, has been to provide a comprehensible reading which would at the same time be faith-ful to Bruno's original text. I must confess that for this purpose I have found Williams' translation of very little assistance, since to the floridity and looseness of Bruno's style it adds elements of confusion which are peculiar to the English. For the occasional liberties I have taken with Bruno's language, I can only apologize on the ground of necessity. De gli eroici furori translated literally would become Of the Heroic Furors, a phrase which hardly carries Bruno's meaning into English. Williams translates it as The Heroic Enthusiasts, which seems equally baf-fling. What Bruno had in mind was obviously the Platonic furor, the divinely inspired frenzy of lovers. With a certain reluctance, therefore, I have departed from Bruno's title so far as to translate it as The Heroic Frenzies, which I hope will carry the necessary connotation and which has already had some acceptance, In order to render Bruno's style as faithfully as possible, I have maintained the structure of his elaborate and diffuse prose, insofar as it was possible to do so without obscuring the sense. I have italicized those words and phrases which were printed in spaced type in the edition of 1585. I have assumed that several of the mythological figures to which Bruno alludes are familiar and needed no annotation. I have, however, cited at some length those literary and philosophical allusions essential to an understanding of the work. I should like to express my deepest gratitude to Professors Maurice Valency, Paul O. Kristeller and William Nelson of Co-lumbia University for their advice and guidance in the prepara-tion of this work.
