Unique édition, rare.Sur le modčle des paratonnerres développés dčs la fin du XVIIIe sičcle, le début du XIXe sičcle vit se manifester un fort intérźt pour les paragrźles, destinés ą protéger les cultures : ils se présentaient comme des perches en bois longues de 10-15 m, équipées d?une pointe de laiton mise ą terre par un fil métallique, voire, curieusement, par une corde en paille de froment ou de seigle, au centre de laquelle court un cordon de lin écru. Ce fut la Suisse romande, et spécialement le canton de Vaud qui prit l'initiative du mouvement (des milliers de paragrźles furent installés tout au long de la rive du Léman entre Nyon et Montreux), lequel se diffusa ensuite dans l'Europe de l'ouest, non sans de fortes réticences scientifiques (Candolle, comme Monge, affichčrent un franc scepticisme). Ą Paris, si l?Académie des sciences, section physique, contesta d'emblée l?efficacité des paragrźles, la (seconde) Société linnéenne de Paris, en revanche, fit partie de leurs fervents promoteurs. En rčgle générale, les paragrźles furent défendus plutōt par des amateurs enthousiastes, agronomes, inventeurs, pasteurs, professeurs, ou encore vignerons et agriculteurs. Enfin, la mźme année 1826 qui vit la publication de notre opuscule, le soufflé retomba bruyamment : dans le canton de Vaud ą l'origine du phénomčne, la ferveur retomba trčs brusquement ą la suite de chutes de grźle dévastatrices tombées sur des territoires que l?on croyait protégés.
