First English edition. 155pp. Cesare Pavese (1908-1950) was an Italian novelist, poet, short story writer, translator, literary critic, and essayist. He is seen by many as one of the most influential Italian writers of his time. This volume contains ten hitherto untranslated short stories, written in 1940 and 1941. They reveal Pavese's characteristic attitude to life: his melancholy introspection, his love for the hills and vineyards around the Piedmontese village of San Stefano Bello, where he spent his childhood. The book is bound in the original blue boards with silver titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition and the contents are tight and clean no inscription. The dustwrapper (design by Keith Cunningham) is very good with some shelf wear, slight fading to the spine and bumping to the top of the spine. The front flap has not been clipped but there is a later publisher's price sticker over the original printed price. The wrapper is in a removable clear protective cover.
