It was written by two experienced field biologists and supervised by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program. The areas described in this book include the Alligator River and Swan Lake, Cypress Park, Roper Island, New Lake Fork Pocosin, Gull Rock Gamelands, Scranton Hardwoods, and Salyer's Ridge. They contain slightly over ten thousand acres and at least 42 significant features. Six of the seven areas described are wholly in private ownership.
