The uncle of famous Australian poet, John Shaw Neilson. William Neilson was born in Scotland in 1842 but lived most of his life in Penola, South Australia. Although he had little formal education, he was accomplished bush poet with many of his poems published in the local press from the 1870s to his death in 1916.

John Neilson [1844-1922]was himself a published bush poet and contributed to local newspapers and Adelaide Punch. He won another prize for verse in 1897, but achieved his widest popularity in outback shearing sheds with a song, 'Waiting for the Rain'. Peake, attempts to collect the records of all arrivals by sea that are available for the various colonies that made up Australia prior to Federation in 1901, and the period thereafter, and to New Zealand. Brief descriptions are given of the records, the record repository and reference number. The types of records covered includes passenger lists of ships, indexes which have been compiled, passenger cards and other records that provide information relating to ship of arrival, e.g. musters and other registers. James Grassie [1813-1904] was a Scottish poet and storyteller who moved to Australia in 1852 and claimed to have been at the Eureka Stockade in 1854. His first few poems published in Australia seem to have appeared in the Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer in 1955-56 although these were unattributed but match his writing style and themes. He seems to have formed a good relationship with local aborigines and many of his poems recount the negative experiences that they suffered. Much of his life in Australia was in the general area of the South East of South Australia & Western Victoria.

They were members of the Royal Sappers and Miners, a specialised military unit trained in engineering abs surveying, sent from Britain to rescue South Australia's survey crisis. Why were they necessary?

'Traces the descendants of William Wilson (1816-1891) who emigrated with his family from Scotland on the Agincourt in 1850. He became a shepherd on sheep runs round Penola. After a trip to the Victorian goldfields, he was able to purchase a block of land in Penola and became a market gardener and orchardist. His orchard inspired John Riddoch to plant grapes at Coonawarra and many of his descendants are now vignerons there. This history traces his antecedents and descendants through his daughters, Margaret who married William Neilson (1842-1916), and Euphemia, who married George Seymour Townsend (1842-1886), and son James Dickson Wilson (1850-1922).' - the publisher.
