Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition, First Impression. An uncommon title. Illustrated throughout in black and red by Chas (Charles) Pears (1873-1958). Paper-covered boards, illustrated to front. A good copy with light wear and marking to boards; and minor splits to the front joint, exposing the webbing underneath. The book is securely bound with hinges intact. Apart from a little light spotting to a few pages, the contents are clean and without bookplates or inscriptions. 24 pp. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 'In the Press and Out Again' is a book for children "all about making books". In humorous fashion, Robert Percy Gossop (1876-1951), tells the story of his book's production, from finding an artist, through the printing and binding processes, to the bookshop. 'In the Press and Out Again' was produced for the first of two Children's Welfare Exhibitions in London which ran for three weeks in 1912-13. The exhibitions encouraged debate around the nature of childhood and child welfare, ranging from educational systems to eugenics, and featured discussions of children's literature (primarily fairy tales), alongside debates and lectures on aspects of child development, psychology and health. R.P. Gossop started his successful career as a designer and freelance illustrator in 1896. From 1902 until 1904 he worked as studio manager for the printers Eyre and Spottiswood, moving to W. H. Smith in 1904 where he designed Smith's famous lozenge shaped logo. In 1913, following a visit to America, Gossop became the first art editor for British Vogue. During the First World War he worked at the Ministry of Information, helping with the distribution of propaganda. At the end of the war he became joint manager at Carlton Studio. In 1923, Gossop set up his own firm of artists' agents, R.P. Gossop Ltd. He continued to work as a freelance designer and illustrator, with commissions including designs for the Empire Marketing Board, Heal & Son Ltd and London Transport. Chas Pears was a successful artist whose big break came when he won a competition organized by the leading fine art magazine, The Studio. He contributed to several magazines including Punch, the Dome, the Longbow and the Sketch, before securing the position of theatrical caricaturist for Pick-Me-Up magazine in 1898. That same year he provided the illustrations for the book, Toby and his Little Dog Tan written by James Gilbert and for the next twenty years he was to receive regular commissions from book publishers. Apart from book and magazine illustrations Pears also carried out commercial work for clients, of which his postcard designs for chocolate makers J S Fry & Co are now highly prized by collectors. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured.
