Porque la extinción de este mundo va pareja a la de unas formas de vida tradicionales, en algunos casos milenarias: el gran¿éxodo del campo a la ciudad, los medios de comunicación, en especial la televisión, homogeneizan las costumbres, llenan los momentos de ocio con iguales distracciones, borran costumbres y relegan creencias. Este paulatino proceso de desruralización se ha extendido por toda Europa y pocos son los países que todavía conservan, en lenta y a veces dolorosa vía de extinción, comunidades campesinas con vitalidad y autarquía productiva suficiente como para continuar fabricando todos aquellos enseres necesarios a sus actividades ancestrales; también se acaban los obradores ciudadanos de carácter familiar, en los que se realizaban artesanías tradicionales no tan ligadas a las necesidades domésticas como las de la población rural; e incluso los talleres reducidos, en los que se habían adoptado elementales formas de mecanización, desaparecen asimismo frente a los ímpetus de unas nuevas formas de demanda y a unas reglas económicas de la producción. El propósito de este libro es el de dar a trav ¿s de las contundentes y humanas imágenes de Catalá Roca una visión de este fugaz mundo que se nos evade ante los ímpetus de nuevas formas de vida.
