Né à Marseille, Simon Joseph Pellegrin fut bientôt destiné à une carrière ecclésiastique, d'où le titre de « l'abbé », qui l'a suivi toute sa vie. Pellegrin réussit à échapper aux sollicitations de ses supérieurs religieux, désireux qu'il réintègre au plus vite et définitivement son ordre. Pellegrin se met vite au service de diverses écoles, telles que la Maison royale de Saint-Louis à Saint-Cyr, pour lesquelles il fournit quantité de poèmes, psaumes et cantiques. Cette inspiration d'ordre pédagogique se reflète dans le preface de ce livre où il dit: "D'ailleurs je me suis dit à moi-même que puisque mon ouvrage portait le nom d'ancien et nouveau Testament, rien ne convenait mieux à des enfants que d'avoir toujours devant les yeux le testament de leur Pere celeste pour l'executer avec plus d'attachement". J'ai cru que je ne pourrais mieux reussir dans mon destin, qu'en reduisant cette sainte histoire en Cantiques, pour la graver plus facilement dans la memoire." Ses inspirations spirituel et pédagogiques ne l'empêcha pas de développer ses talents auprès de l'Opéra ainsi que des théâtres de la foire, ce que fait dire Rémy dans une phrase à son sujet : « Le matin catholique et le soir idolâtre. Il dînait de l'Église et soupait du théâtre».
