America, their America is a broadside against life in that country, sufficiently relentless that it destroyed Clark's reputation and saw him effectively expelled from his fellowship by rather startled authorities. He is a wonderful observer with a smart, energetic prose style, and the work deserves to be revisited. As A. Bolaji Akinyemi wrote, 'the strength lies in the message'.
