A typed letter signed P A Rockefeller to Mr. Lee Olwell: My dear Lee, As requested…by you on the phone, I am enclosing you my check for $50,000. on account of the Dietrich purchase at Millbrook. Will you, at your convenience, kindly acknowledge receipt. This letter documents one of the numerous transactions made by Percy Rockefeller due to his familial wealth and his profitable roles as a board director for numerous corporations from mining and steel ventures to Western Union. Lee Olwell was then serving as vice president of the National City Bank, whose board Rockefeller sat on, and in charge of advertising and public relations. He also directed real estate and building activities of the bank throughout the world. While that bank managed to survive the Great Depression, which began just a few weeks after this letter was sent, it was a casualty of the Great Recession. Dietrich is likely a reference to Dietrich Inc., an American coachbuilder that existed between 1925 and 1936. The letter is in very good condition with two small stains at the top and some minor folds. It is a fascinating window into the financial normalcy that was occurring just weeks before the biggest meltdown in United States history.
