Cbl. med. Wiss., 16/30. - Berlin, August Hirschwald, 27.Juli 1878, 8°, pp.545-560, Rückenbroschur. Walther Flemming (1843-1905) claimed that it was on the very day that he gave his lecture in Kiel (Zur Kenntniss der Zelle und ihrer Theilungs-Erscheinungen, vom Prof. W. Flemming in Kiel, Vortrag gehalten im Kieler physiologischen Verein, am 1. August 1878) that he read Peremeschko's paper. Peremeschko had sent a brief report from Kiev describing the observations he made on the cells in the transparent tail of Triton cristatus. He found that, in epithelial cells, stellate connectives tissues cells, white blood corpuscles and endthelial cells, divisions of the nucleus occurred in the same way. The whole cell appeared to fill with granules and Fäden" (threads) which in due course formed this new nuclei: "As soon as the threads appear, those in the middle of the barrel become slighty thicker (the thickenings do not usually lie in the same plane); then the threads in these thickenings tear and the barrel divides into two equal parts which at once separate. That is how the two nuclei are formed'.* Peremenschko states that he had already written his report when he read Schleicher's paper on the division of cartilage cells. The paper to which Peremeschko refers appeared in 1874 (=1878, see his foot note 14) (Ueber den Teilungsprozess der Knorpelzelle, 8.Juni 1878); a second paper , also on cartilage cells, appeared in 1879 (Arch. mikrosk. Anat. 16/3. (=Oct. 1878). Schleicher demonstrated the whole process of mitosis, including the reconstitution of the daughter nuclei, in slices of amphibian embryo cartilage and the scapular cartilage of young frogs and newborn kittens. Schleicher gave the name "karyokinesis" to the whole process of 'indirect' nuclear division, and Peremesschko admits that his own observations differ from those of Schleicher only in detail. The fact that Flemming claimed to have read Peremeschko's paper in the very day he first reported his own findings, and Peremeschko claimed to have written his report before he read Schleicher's paper, indicates how closely similar the work of all three men was, and Peremeschko observed that the chromosomal 'threads' divided, there is nothing in their papers to indicated they were aware that the "threads" split longitudinally. That discovery belongs to Flemming." Henry Harris, The Birth of the Cell, pp.155-156 Peter Iwanowitsch Peremeschko - Petr Ivanovich Peremeshko (1833-1893), "geb.
