Condition: Aceptable. 17th-century edition of Antoni Perez's celebrated legal treatise on Roman Imperial Law, printed by the prestigious Daniel Elzevier in Amsterdam ? Editio Undecima (11th edition), 1673. Antonio Perez (1583-1672) was a distinguished Spanish jurist and professor of Civil Law at the University of Louvain, and Royal Counsellor. His Institutiones Imperiales was a standard legal textbook widely used across European universities throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Binding: Original period brown leather, showing natural wear consistent with age of 350 years. Front cover detached and in need of rebinding ? priced accordingly. Text in Latin. Pages show age-appropriate toning and foxing. A solid piece of 17th-century legal history.

Zum Rechtsberater des Königs von Spanien ernannt, erbat dieser von Perez ein Rechtsgutachten bezüglich der von Ludwig XIV. auf einen Teil der Niederlande erhobenen Gebietsansprüche. Perez hatte den Mut, den Entscheid zugunsten des französischen Königs ausfallen zu lassen. Die vorliegenden ?Erotemata?, d.h. Fragestellungen zu den Institutionen Justinians, die in mehreren Auflagen erschienen, sind auf die praktische Aneignung des Rechtsstoffes angelegt. Denn die Darstellungen von anderen Juristen wie Cujas, so sagt Perez ?Ad Lectorem?, seien für Gelehrte geschrieben, er aber wolle den Anfängern eine Handreichung bieten. Dem Titelblatt zufolge handelt es sich beim vorliegenden Band ausschliesslich um die Institutionen als erstem (vollständigen) Teil, dem ein zweiter über das kanonische Recht beigegeben war, der aber hier nicht vorhanden ist. Am oberen nichtbedruckten Rand ist das hübsche Titelkupfer, das Kaiser Justinian in einer Gerichtsszene darstellt, ohne Bildverlust etwas kurz beschnitten. A.
