The Latin translation here is by Peringer, the leading 17th century scholar on the Karaites. His work helped raise the Karaits status among Christians. The Swedish King, Charles XI (reigned 1660-1697) caused the Karaites to be viewed by many as a separate ethnic group from the Jews. Charles XI sent Gustav Peringer (1651-1710), an orientalist from the University of Uppsala, on a fact-finding mission to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the information he provided contributed to the gradual perception and treatment of the Karaites an ethnoreligious group separate from Jews. Thus, while the negative image of the Jew prevailed in Poland-Lithuania, the Karaites, not being viewed as Jewish, made them kosher.
