Paperback onder kartonomslag geillustreerd in kleur, 165 x 240mm., 95pp., illustraties in kleur. ISBN 9789074311731. Door zijn tijdgenoot Philippe Baert, secretaris van de Brusselse kunstacademie, werd Jan Baptist Simoens (1715-1779) als de belangrijkste Gentse architect uit de tweede helft van de 18de eeuw beschouwd. Het is de enige die is opgenomen in zijn Memoires sur les sculpteurs et architectes des Pays-Bas. In de 19de en 20ste eeuw is dat beeld geleidelijk aan afgebrokkeld. Recent onderzoek heeft echter aangewezen dat dit negatieve artistieke beeld van Simoens dient bijgesteld. Die ommekeer is vooral bewerkstelligd door de vondst van de korte biografische nota, die de neef van Simoens, August Bernaert, rond 1780 naar Baert opstuurde, vergezeld van een tekst getiteld Memorie nopende de wercken, een memorie die door Simoens zelf kort voor zijn dood is opgesteld. Omdat uit de nieuwe archiefgegevens over Simoens bleek dat een aantal van zijn belangrijkste werken in het Land van Aalst gerealiseerd werden (abdijen van Geraardsbergen, Grimminge, Ninove en Sint-Martens-Lierde; kasteel van Leeuwergem) besloot het bestuur van de geschiedkundige vereniging Het Land van Aalst om een tentoonstelling aan zijn oeuvre in het Land van Aalst te wijden en daartoe verder opzoekingswerk te verrichten. Dit onderzoek brengt een schat van nieuwe gegevens aan het licht en voert ons terug naar Gent, naar het milieu van de Gentse Tekenacademie en naar de rol die Simoens daar gespeeld heeft. Simoens introduceerde er het classicisme. Het classicisme was bij uitstek de stijl die uitdrukking gaf aan de ideeen van de Verlichting. Het was de stijl die door het Oostenrijkse gouvernement in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden gepropageerd werd. Een samenvattende bewerking van dit onderzoek, met het accent op de illustraties, vormt het onderwerp van een nieuwe publicatie in de reekst Kleine Cultuurdgidsen, uitgegeven door het Provinciebestuur van Oost-Vlaanderen. 0 g.

Will universities control and structure the process by establishing inter-university networks and creating joint virtual campuses? Will universities join efforts with industry and society to create flexible lifelong learning systems?
