Bon exemplaire de cette utopie par un professeur de droit au Collège de France qui fait ici un éloge de la liberté commerciale, de l'agriculture, du travail, et des vertus familiales et sociales. En creux il s'agit d'une critique des institutions de la France d'ancien régime.

Il s'agit d'une lettre rédigée par le juriste et homme de lettres Jean…-André Perreau (1749-1813) à Brissot de Warville (1754-1793), pour le prier de recommander auprès du marquis de Lafayette un employé de la Régie des aides : ce dernier souhaiterait entrer "en qualité de lieutenant ou sous lieutenant dans le corps que l'on va former pour la garde de Paris". Brissot était en effet très lié au marquis de Lafayette, qui l'avait introduit auprès de George Washington lors de son voyage aux États-Unis en 1788 et qui lui offrit ses appuis pour son élection à la Législative. Quant à Perreau, élève de Quesnay et de Mirabeau, il était à cette époque gouverneur des enfants du comte de Caraman et avait acquis une certaine notoriété en tant qu'auteur d'une "histoire égyptienne" publiée en 1782, Mizrim, ou le sage à la cour (Neuchatel, Imprimerie de la société typographique). Brissot, qui le fréquentait au château des Caraman de Roissy, l'évoque avec chaleur dans ses Mémoires : "Physionomie douce et ouverte, langage séduisant, aménité dans la conversation, âme sensible et tendre, raison éclairée, Perreau avait toutes les qualités qui peuvent procurer de véritables amis (.) Il croyait à la possibilité de former de bons rois, et par eux de gouverner sagement de vastes états. Il ne voulait que des réformes partielles : c'était le but de tous ses écrits ; ils ont contribué à la Révolution."* Perreau adopta les principes de la Révolution et fonda le périodique le Vrai Citoyen en 1791. Il enseigna à l'École Centrale et au Collège de France, entra au Tribunat en 1801 et se présenta comme rapporteur lors de la discussion du Code Civil. Octavo, completely uncut, original wrappers. First edition: the fictional discovery and translation of an ancient travel account used to mask a political satire. The London imprint is probably a disguise since the binding shows the use of French printed waste as strengthening. Published only five years before the revolution, the… subterfuge is understandable. In one of the most disingenuous prefaces in the imaginary voyage tradition, the author proffers a wonderfully diverse raft of excuses as to the integrity of the edition, which apparently only exists as an imprecise manuscript in 'mauvais latin' - a problem which the eponymous editor gleefully compounds with his own revisions. The work itself turns out to be the history of Melés, King of Lydie, and chronicles his extensive travels through his own kingdom, which proved the happy notion that everything the king has learnt in the schools and salons is quite useless, and that it is only through travel and experience that the true nature of his realm will become apparent. Lydie is clearly France, and the catalogue of abuses that the king discovers have direct relevance to pre-revolutionary France: the impositions on trade, the systems of privilege and their rank abuse, and the censorship of dissent. . In fine condition except that the original marbled wrappers are loose and defective revealing French printed waste used in the binding.
