Has full color Japanese prints on the inside covers, and many black and white line drawings on the interior pages. Has a penciled price crossed out on the inside front paper; the rest of the book is clean and seemingly unread.

Second Edition of Vol. I and II only of Commodore Perry's Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, compiled by Francis L. Hawks, with the suppressed "Public Bath at Simoda" plate which depicted men and women together in the nude (Vol. I, p. 408). This is the Senate Report, preceded by the House Report. Vol. I being the 'Narrative' and Vol. II the 'Natural History Reports' of the expedition. Lacking two plates of facsimile Japanese paintings in Vol. I, also the plate of the Temple of Hat-chi-man-ya-chu-ro; the plate of the First Landing at Goraham is bound in at p. 272 instead of 256. With 86 plates in Vol. I and 42 plates of 43 in Vol. II, many aquatint or hand colored. With three additional cartographic plates and two folding maps in Vol. I, and 16 large folding maps in Vol. II, with some paper reinforcements at the folds. Seven leaves of facsimile text, of the Japanese language version of the treaty signed during Perry's expedition. Modern rebinding with library style gray cloth, with gilt lettering on the spine. It does not contain the suppressed nude bathing scene plate. Volume 2 is illustrated with 43 lithographic plates, 3 maps (two of them fold-out), a facsimile of the original treaty with Japan, and 14 folded charts at the rear. Volume 3 is illustrated with 352 zodiacal plates. First edition. Large quartos, bound in decorated cloth (two dark green and one brown) with gilt lettering and design on the spines. Moderate shelf wear and aging, previous owner's book-plate on front paste-down of each volume, light foxing to endpapers, occasional creasing or edge tears to some of the fold-outs, else all volumes are very good.

"In March, 1852 Commander Perry was appointed head of this naval expedition to induce the Japanese government to establish diplomatic relations with the United States. In the following year the Japanese were finally forced to accept a treaty demanding better treatment of shipwrecked seamen and which allowed American ships to dock at two Japanese ports to purchase fuel and supplies. "The most important result, however, was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan" - Hill. Senate issue, Beverly Tucker printer. Non-authorial presentation on the second blank flyleaf. Text generally bright and clean. Binding loose and worn with crude repair job and dampstaining to rear panel and hinge. Marginal dampstaining to a dozen or so leaves, the largest six inches long protruding an inch into the margins. Occasional pencil marks. Minor surface adhesion damage to plate page 130. Bathing plate not present at p. 408 (apparently these were excised from most Senate copies) here replaced with another plate and noted as such in the plate index. Plate at 281 is "Lew Chew" rather than the "Inner harbor and ruins, Timagusko". Plate at page 90 is trimmed and laid in. Plate at page 462 is missing. Several short edge tears or scuffs to a few pages (375, 389, 407, 469) one extending into the text. Old paper repair to page 461. Maps present at pages 151 (damaged), 186, 197, 242, 483, and 512. In total, Vol 1 contains 87 (of 89) plates in the index plus one replacement. Otherwise complete as called for. Fair. Nicholson printer. The first portion is text, the last 705 pages are zodiacal light observations (sky charts), each with a diagram of the night sky with explanation in text opposite. Cloth. An important work documenting Commodore Perry's expedition. Volume 2 contains "Observations in Relation to Cyclones of the Western Pacific : Embraced in a Communication to Commodore Perry" by William C. Redfield, and was the last work done by Redfield before his death. This set is often found with different plate counts and/or occasional substitutions. There was also a one volume edition published in the same year by Appleton missing some of the information in this three volume set. A fascinating read and view into this expedition.

This is Volume 1 (537 pp) which is the key volume in the three volume set and contain the majority of the lithographs/engravings. All illustrations are rendedered in black and white. The title page indicates this is a facsimile of the Beverly Tucker printing (Senate Printer) -- Condition. The book is in Fine condition without faults except for minor cove and edge scrapes and a couple of slightly bumped corners -- clean and solid.

Large black and white folded map. Some browning at the folds, some fold lines have been repaired with archival tape but overall in good condition. Scale 1:37,000,000. 54 x 91 cm "In January 1852 Perry was selected to undertake the most important diplomatic mission ever entrusted to an American naval officer, the negotiation of a treaty with Japan, a country at this time sealed against intercourse with the Occidental powers" (DAB). By March 31, 1854, the treaty granting the U.S. trading rights had been signed by the Japanese. Drawn by Edward. Sels and engraved by Selmar Siebert this map was issued as part of the United States Naval Expedition to Japan, 1852-1854. Shows the route of the US Steam Frigates Mississippi, Susquehanna and Powhatan. Some regions such as Antarctica and Enderbury's Land appear to be un-explored, Tasmania appears at Van Diemen's Land.

Condition: Fine. Facsimile Reprint. [High Quality Facsimile Edition of Volume 1, 2 and 3 of the Original Government Narrative of the Perry Expedition published in 1856 and 1857]. This is Volumes 1 (537 pp), Volume 2 (414+ pp) and Volume 3 (705 pp) All illustrations are rendered in black and white. The book is 4to with page size of 8 1/4 x 11 in). Volume 2 does not contain the map folio which is at the back of Volume 2 in the original printing. It does have the maps and charts that were in the body of the volume rather than the map folio at the rear of the volume. AMS printed the maps found at the back of the original Volume 2 in a separate folio (not a part of this offering) rather than with Volume 2. An excellent way to enjoy the Narrative of the expedition as originally published but at a fraction of the cost. No other reprint/facsimile edition of the Narrative matches this set in completeness or quality. The title page indicates this is a facsimile of the Beverly Tucker printing (Senate Printer) -- Condition.
