View prepared for ''The Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan: performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854.'', by Wilhelm Heine with figures based on the daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown. The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew (Ryukyu) in 1854, where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. The American flag can be seen flying atop the building in the middle ground, but it is almost an afterthought: the focus of the picture are the Lew Chew coolies and the landscape.

Add to basketSecond copy recorded of the printed programme (serving also as invitation) to a minstrel show performed on-board Commodore Perry's flagship by the "Japanese Olio Minstrels", comprising sailors from the ship's crew, many performing in black-face, but also with a few African-Americans. Perry made his expedition to Japan to deliver the American President Millard Fillmore's letter of friendship to the Emperor of Japan and negotiate the Treaty of Kanagawa. As the ship left Hong Kong for Japan in January 1854, it set up an on-board printing office with a small press that had been sent from America by the State Department. The treaty was signed on 31 March 1854 and after it was tested at Hakodate (Hakodadi) Perry invited various Japanese dignitaries to attend the minstrel show on-board his ship on 29 May 1854, at 7 pm. The only copy recorded in the literature belonged to the wife of Commodore Perry's grandson and passed to the Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, Maryland. The programme lists the pieces performed and gives the names of the crew members for each act. Programmes are known for three shows given on the ship, but only two were printed by the ship's own press. They are extremely rare.Somewhat foxed but in very good condition, with only a few folds and with the paper stretched apart at a couple points along the edge. A remarkable document of a unique American musical genre, as performed for Japanese on Commodore Perry's ship.l Morison, Commodore Perry's Japan Expedition Press and shipboard theatre, 1967, pp. 40-41; Yellin, "Mrs. Belmont, Matthew Perry and the 'Japanese Minstrels'", in: American Music, 14 (1996), pp. 257-275, at pp. 267-269 (including fig. 6); cf. Lovett, "The Japan Expedition Press", in: Harvard Library bulletin, 12 (1958), pp. 242-252, illustrating a similar programme for a concert on 26 May 1854. A programme and invitation, printed letterpress on washi mulberry tissue paper with a lace-like decorative flower pattern in white.

Sailing Directions for Yedo. By Lieut. Wm. L. Maury, U.S. Navy.By order of Commodore M. C. Perry. Silas Bent, Flag Lieutenant (Morison: Philadelphia Maritime Museum; U. S. N. Records, Kress Library, Harvard Business School). Printed in blue paper. 320 x 196 mm. Three broadsides, folio, printed letterpress on washi mulberry tissue paper or blue rag paper; headlines printed in a large ornamental display type, with a vignette beneath of the American eagle; text in two columns in roman type; each example with old fold lines and signs of mounting tape verso, housed in a handsome custom clamshell box. 'Since the State Department had not seen fit to supply paper for the press, the Commodore wrote to his flag interpreter, the sinologist S. Wells Williams, "in great haste" on 4 January 1854, begging him to procure paper at Canton. Perry's paymaster had already purchased "a quantity" of European-made paper at Hong Kong but not enough for probable needs. Williams procured a lot of the flimsiest sort of mulberry-leaf paper and some blue rag paper, which Perry used to splice out his insufficient supply of low-quality white stock bought in Hong Kong. The press was capable of printing only single sheets of about 6 by 8 inches, but by running double sheets through twice, a number of two-page leaflets were produced. Perry used the press for three purposes: (i) to print sailing directions for the harbors and coasts of Japan and Okinawa ("the Great Lew Chew") which his officers had surveyed; (2) to disseminate throughout the Squadron copies of official documents, such as President Fillmore's Letter to the Emperor and the treaty with Okinawa; and (3) to print playbills for theatrical performances on board his ships. The sailing directions are evidence of Perry's desire to help all ships of all nations. He did not keep them for his own country's vessels; they were reprinted in his official Report, in the Hong Kong newspapers, and elsewhere.'(Morison, p.35). Reference: S. E.
