Generally a strong attack on gambling and a warning of its consequences, examples being given from current members of society of all levels, with chapters on the laws and history of gaming, interior of a gaming house, the doctrine of chances explained game by game, including probability problems, revenue from gaming, etc. The suppressed chapter 8 is summarised in the Contents: Dunne attacks the clergy, religion, the King, various named persons, quack doctors, concluding 'All animals alike possess reason, Tax-Gatherers, Brokers, and Commissioners of Land and Assessed Taxes excepted.' Not including pages 311 to 438, which in most copies were redacted. 12mo (192 x 105mm): [4],viii,9-310,439-456pp (p. 264 misnumbered "252"), with hand-colored engraved frontispiece of "La Roulette." Contemporary brown linen-backed darker brown boards, original printed paper label to spine, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed, some leaves unopened. "Stouthall" [underlined] noted on front paste-down (possibly referring to Stouthall mansion on the the Gower Peninsula, part of Swansea, in Wales. Spine label chipped at edges but completely legible, front hinge repaired, else a spectacular, unsophisticated wide-margined copy, virtually free of foxing and stains. Jessel 459. Not in Halkett & Laing. Toole Stott (English Conjuring) 557. According to Jessel, unexpurgated copies are "of the greatest rarity," although Toole Stott says "I have come across more copies of the unexpurgated edition than of the expurgated." Following publication, the book "was immediately called in on account of the libellous [sic] matter in the eighth chapterof 'Evil-disposed Personages,' pp. 311-438." Rouge et Noir ( also called *Trente et Quarante") is a 17th-century game of French origin played with cards on a special table, whose name derives from the colors (red and black) marked on the table layout, or tapis. The New Pocket Hoyle (London, 1810) still described the game in detail. N. B. An elegant production from Whitingham for Eton College prizewinners, the first leaf printed in small caps, reading: "Hunc Librum [recipient's name in ms.]: "Ab Etona Discedenti Bona Omnia et Fausta Ominatus D D E C Hawtrey Magister Informator A D M DCCC XL I [X in ms.]" In 1844, Charles Whittingham "persuaded Henry Caslon to revive the 'old-faced Roman' types Caslon and his partner were skeptical, but of course they supplied what was wanted. Pickering zealously seconded Nephew Whittingham's project, and, indeed put it to the trial at once by ordering an Eton prize-book, 'Juvenalis Satira' in quarto form, printed in old-face great primer, with red type=borders and ornaments. But there were many delays in the production of the book" (Warren, p. 149-150). Whittingham also reprinted for Longmans "The Diary of Lady WIlloughby", an eighteenth-century novel, using the same type. Bumping to corners, most noticeable to the lower front, some sunning of the spine cloth, soiling, and a small cosmetic split to the tail of the spine, strong and tight; internally clean, with the bookplate of Sir Joseph Pullen, Baronet, to the front pastedown, edges untrimmed, hand colored frontispiece of dissolute rakes playing roulette, rear endpapers with tear to lower corner. A very good, solid copy in original publisher's boards. A searing, and at the time controversial, indictment of the excesses of gaming and gambling in Regency London. One of the few periods in British history when social standing was simultaneously highly defined to the most ridiculous degrees, but also in certain spheres, without physical boundary. One of the driving forces for this blurring of the lines was sport, with boxing and gaming in particular being drivers for the nobility to mix with and appreciate the skills of, the lower orders. It was at the same time expected of the aristocracy to rub shoulders with prize fighters, jockeys, and their ilk in cockpits and the yards of coaching inns, whilst also being decried as symptomatic of a decay in the standard of the aristocratic product. Gambling, often to excess, was seen as a pre-requisite of nobility, and to be taught to fence by Angelo, or stand a couple of rounds in the ring with a Cribb or a Mendoza, were vied for honors amongst the smart set. The first requirement of a gentleman was fearlessness, the second to take a loss carelessly on the chin - paying one's bills ranked rather lower down the scale. Dunne's intent was to name and shame the major practitioners of the worst gaming sins; the ruination of younger men dragged into debt by peer pressure and criminal manipulation, and the exploitation of them by older, more dissolute, and less well off members of their own class of which there were legion. The book was significantly visible among its targets to warrant suppression of the chapter in which Dunne named names and pointed fingers; opinions differ among collectors as to the relative rarity of suppressed vs. unsuppressed, with the general opinion being that the lawyers were a little slow and significant enough copies slipped through as to make scarcity a moot point.
