Rose Mary Woods (1917-2005) was the personal secretary for President Richard Nixon from his time in Congress, through his presidency. She emerged on the national stage during the Watergate scandal when gaps were discovered in the White House tapes. She demonstrated how an erasure like this could happen by stretching from one side of her desk to another. This maneuver became known as the "Rose Mary Stretch" and was met with skepticism. After his resignation, she followed President Nixon to California but returned to Washington to work on Capitol Hill. She passed away in 2005 and a memorial service was held at the Nixon Presidential Library. Signed.

This was the personal copy of Erskine Caldwell, the noted American author whose novels about the rural poor of the American South mixed violence, sex, tragedy and comedy. Inscribed on the front free endpaper is "Erskine and Helen Caldwell, XXVI January, MCMXXVII [26 January, 1927], University Virginia" indicating that he owned and undoubtably read the book while married to his first wife, and attending the University of Virginia. The book's contents regarding racial issues most certainly contributed to his later works such as his 1932 novel Tobacco Road. This book is about man: his nature, evolution, race, heredity, the environment, sex, good and evil. The book is ex-library from the Doctor Shaw Memorial Library in Mount Herman, Maine, probably donated by Caldwell in his later years. Ex-Library.
