SYNOPSIS: This is the story of one man's part in that remarkable body of men and women, the Metropolitan Police Force. Peter Henderson Beveridge, known throughout Scotland Yard as "P.B." was, in the last 15 years of his working life, in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department. Peter Beveridge was one of a force of about 18,000. He was a detective and there were only 1,400 of them with the responsibility for investigating crime and catching the criminals. He was not a phenomenon, not as brilliant as the "private eye" of fiction. He was the product of a superb training scheme which he mastered and improved upon. When he retired he had a force of almost 300 detectives under his command which covered every crime that happened on 120 square miles of territory. Before he reached this position he had been in charge of a division, had worked in the fashionable West End, bossed the famous Flying Squad and investigated a whole series of murders. Many famous cases appear in this book, such as the macabre story of Stanley Setty, the Land Army girl who was bludgeoned to death in an amusement tent, and the big dog-doping case. Throughout the whole of his career Peter Beveridge remained a human being. What he liked most of all was to be at home with his family, a difficult thing for any detective, and that is where this story begins. Peter Beveridge was born in Fife in 1899, the son of a police constable. He grew up in an atmosphere of police stations and police work. One of his grandfathers was a constable and he had two uncles in Scottish police forces. On leaving school he enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders, and was drafted to France. During the march through London it was the policemen directing the traffic who caught his eye and as he marched his mind was made up. On demobilisation he applied for admission to the London police force and was accepted. At the end of his training period he was sent to Whitechapel, in the East End of London. After only nine months' service he was working in plain clothes, but it was another two years before he was promoted to sergeant. Four years afterwards he became a detective inspector with the famous Flying Squad. After going back to Whitechapel as the divisional detective inspector he was sent to the West End in charge of the C.I.D. In January, 1940, he was promoted to Chief Inspector, and was given charge of the Flying Squad. Finally, he became Chief Superintendent.
