Brinckmann zeigt, daß die antike Pädagogik in den humanistischen Bildungsvorstellungen seiner Zeit höchst einseitig u. in einer der menschlichen Natur wenig entsprechenden Weise mißverstanden worden sei. Die Schrift wurde "von den beiden kühnen Neuerern auf dem Gebiete der Pädagogik, Basedow und Campe, mit freudigem Beifall begrüßt. Campe trug Brinckmann sofort die Mitarbeiterschaft an seinem großen pädagogischen Sammelwerke (der Allgemeinen Revision) an, das damals gerade in Vorbereitung war" (ADB XLVII, 236). Ähnlich wie Basedow war Brinckmann ein Vertreter des eudämonistischen Prinzips u. bestimmte als oberstes Erziehungsziel die Glückseligkeit, die in einer glücklichen u. möglichst allseitigen Entwicklung aller Anlagen des Zöglings liege.
