The book is bumped at the corners, but clean inside, with no inscriptions, etc. The book is a story of India by a wri…ter who was born there and whose reputation as an interpreter of the Indian scene was established by the great success of her earlier novel, Indigo. Having grown up among her Indian characters, she could see into the workings of their hearst and minds and interpret their years of criis in terms of character as could few other contemporary writers. The time is 1947. Inependence and Partition are imminent; the Hindus, the Muslims and the Sikhs must now settle their own destinies by fire, sword, and where possible by compromise. Against this vast background moves a small group of people in whose lives are mirrored the intensity and the compelling drama of India's predicament. For years the dream of independence has dominated the thoughts and hopes of multitudes. When at last they are confronted with a plan, detailed and concrete, men and women who have lived in friendship become vexed amd confused. Each one reacts in a different way. The young Hindu painter, the young Muslim writer and the Maharaja had been firm friends, but now the Maharaqja's mother, fearing her wealth and position are undermined, and distrusting the ideals and ambitions of her son and his friends, seizes the opportunity to sow distrust and dissension among men striving honestly to reconcile their differences. The result is a story of violent action in which the troubles of a subcontinent are mirrored in the affairs of a group of living characters whose individualities are never lost in the parties they represent. Slight fading to the lettering on the spine, a small bump to the top left corner of the rear panel and light surface marks to the front and rear panels. The page edges are browned with some spotting and staining to the top edges and one small brown stai…n to the fore edges. Light spotting to the front pastedown. Small torn hole to the title page - about one inch long and a quarter of an inch wide. There is also a little surface damage at the centre of the copyright page. Pages are lightly browned but are otherwise unmarked. Jacket has been trimmed along the edges of the front and rear flaps - about a quarter-inch from the front and perhaps half-an-inch from the rear flap. I believe the jacket has come from an ex-library copy of another first printing and it has the original price of 15s on the front flap.
