Contact seller5-star sellerA fill-in-the-blanks job-printed receipt for this California publisher, detailing layaway terms. Verso with blanks to record customer's payment record. 3-7/8" x 10" One Francis Cutting has deposited One Dollar, as of February 19, 1887, towards purchase of "1 Set Dickens" at a list price of $10.00. The set was paid in full March…21st of that year. As background to this transaction, we find that in the 1870s, Collier started work as a salesman for P. J. Kenedy, publisher of books for the Roman Catholic market. When Collier wanted to boost sales by offering books on a subscription plan, it led to a disagreement with Kenedy, so Collier left to start his own subscription service. P. F. Collier & Son began in 1875, expanding into the largest subscription house in America with sales of 30 million books during the 19001910 decade." [Wiki] So here offered a surviving 1880s receipt of Collier's very successful subscription business. Age-toning. Vertical fold line. Very Good. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve.
Circa 1890 sales double-sided broadside for bookseller agent Bedard & Horton advertising "Collier's Cyclopedia of Commercial and Social Information. Treasury of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge." which was issued by New York publisher P.F. Collier.

Contact seller5-star sellerApproximate dimensions: H 12 inches x L 9 inches. Sheet toned with center horizontal fold-line, top corners creased, short minor tear at lower right edge. Front side (recto) with varying fonts and font sizes: UNRIVALED! UNEQUALED! UNEXCELLED! | THE MOST WONDERFUL LITERARY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE 19TH CENTURY! | THE NINTH IMPROVED AND… REVISED EDITION OF | COLLIER'S CYCLOPEDIA | OF COMMERCIAL AND SOCIAL INFORMATION. | TREASURY OF USEFUL AND ENTERTAINING KNOWLEDGE. . . . [various laudatory hyperbole] . . . TO SUBSCRIBE AT ONCE. | SOLD AT THE INSTALLMENT PLAN OF 25 CENTS A WEEK. | BEDARD & HORTON, AGENTS. IN THE CITY FOR A WEEK. Verso side has two column list of contents. Undated but should be circa 1890-1895 as New York publisher P.F. Collier first issued his Cyclopedia in 1882 according to OCLC. Per the broadside's concluding phrasing, Bedard & Horton were likely travelling sales agents rather than a physical bookstore as a Google search does not turn up any information on them. The broadside was acquired from a Tuscaloosa, Alabama estate which had a number of mid to late nineteenth century books most of which were apparently purchased either in Tuscaloosa or Mobile, Alabama so perhaps the Bedard & Horton partnership hailed from that region as well.
