First edition. 318pp. and 16 black and white illustrations by Peter Fraser, including a map of the Shetland Isles showing incidents in the book. The author of this book was a native, and lover, of Shetland. His aim in this book has been to present a "Saga" descriptive of the Isles in a series of pictures, placed roughly in chronological order, of notable periods or epochs of Shetland's absorbing and astonishing history. He starts from the earliest times and brings his story down to the crofter of the 1930s. It includes accounts of the coming of the Norseman and Vikings; the settlement of the islands; the time of the Spanish Armada; the great Dutch fishery; the troubled periods of Patrick Stewart; piracy and the press-gang; whale fishing; and the development of the fishing centre of Lerwick. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling (dulled) on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. There is uneven sunning to the spine and the rear board. Light to moderate foxing to edges. From the publisher: "In the illuminating essay he has written to accompany this new work by Peter Fraser, Gerry Badger tells of the mix of feelings he had on first seeing one of Fraser's photographs. Moving from surprise, bafflement and incomprehension to admiration and pleasure, he experienced the 'flame of recognition' when, to quote James Joyce, the 'whatness' of a thing is revealed. Fraser himself has described his pictures of static, seemingly mundane objects as 'trying to understand what the world around me is made of.' The results of this quest, which is at once delightfully simple and highly sophisticated, are visually stunning images that, best of all, become more rewarding every time you look at them. Since his work was first exhibited in the early 1980s, Peter Fraser has established himself as one of the most important photographers working in the UK. Drawing inspiration from the work of William Eggleston, with whom he spent a formative two months in 1984, he has become a master in the poetic use of color in his art. In 2004 Fraser was shortlisted for the prestigious Citigroup Photography Prize. An internationally acclaimed photographer, his work has been widely exhibited and is included in many collections in Europe and the United States." Signed by Author.

New in publisher's shrink-wrap.Peter Fraser (born 1953) is a British fine art photographer. Since his work was first exhibited in the early 1980s, Peter Fraser has established himself as one of the most important photographers working in the UK. Drawing inspiration from the work of William Eggleston, with whom he spent a formative two months in 1984, he has become a master in the poetic use of color in his art. An internationally acclaimed photographer, his work has been widely exhibited and is included in many collections in Europe and the United States. In 2002 The Photographers' Gallery (London) showed a 20-year overview of Fraser's work, drawing on photographs from a number of his series making a distinction between very large scale 'Images' which became part of the architecture of the gallery space and framed 'Works' hung from the walls. The photographs included in this collection come from that exhibition and were the outcome of a synthesis between two preoccupations, namely his continuing conviction that small things are important, and that the surface of the earth more than ever looks the way it does because the human brain directs the hand to change the shape and nature of materials. Frazer was shortlisted for the Citigroup Photography Prize (now known as the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize) in 2004.
