Condition: New. SB. 28pp During the Korean War, British Army personnel found themselves among the thousands of United Nations troops captured by North Korean and Chinese forces. For those taken prisoner, the experience was often as arduous as the fighting itself.Life in captivity was characterised by severe deprivation. Prisoners frequently endured inadequate rations, poor accommodation and bitter Korean winters, conditions that contributed to malnutrition, illness and considerable suffering. Alongside these physical hardships came sustained efforts at political indoctrination. Chinese-run camps subjected prisoners to interrogations, lectures and psychological pressure intended to influence their political beliefs and undermine military loyalty.Despite these efforts, most British prisoners resisted coercion and sought to preserve discipline and morale. Mutual support, informal organisation and adherence to military routines helped many maintain a sense of identity and purpose under exceptionally difficult circumstances. The eventual armistice of July 1953 brought an end to the fighting and paved the way for the exchange and repatriation of prisoners. For the British servicemen who returned, captivity had left a lasting physical and psychological legacy. Their experiences form an important, and sometimes overlooked, part of the wider history of Britain's involvement in the Korean War. Book.
