In this book, he "suggests that man's uniqueness in the animal world lies in his capacity for art. Being at once an instinctual and a reasoning creature, his mode of living is bound to involve two ways of working: the natural way and the artificial. These two ways of working are always present in his experience of two aspects of a single process. For instance, it is natural to sleep, to eat, and to mate; but houses, cooking and marriage belong to the realm of art. Herbert Read described this as 'a very valuable synthesis of the philosophy of art, and gives art its right place in the scheme of things.'". Condition: The book is in good condition. The dustwrapper is heavily worn with closed tears and loss to the head of the spine.
