To control an odour nuisance, it must first be quantified. This is difficult for odours as there is no single parameter which can easily describe odour nuisance…, and a range of measurements may be required. It is not sufficient to simply measure concentrations, as it is the rate of emission that is of paramount importance if odour sources are to be suitably assessed and controlled. Odour measurement is further complicated in that many measurements cannot be performed on site, meaning that samples must be preserved for laboratory analysis. This report is a review of techniques currently available for odour source sampling, sample collection and preservation, and odour measurement. It has arisen from a need to consolidate earlier studies across various sectors, in particular the agricultural and wastewater treatment industries.
