Softcover. Condition: Good. Peter M. Hinds' brief, early history of Lamoni, Iowa, then headquarters of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (renamed The Community of Christ in 2001). Assuming RLDS leadership in 1860, Joseph Smith's eldest son Joseph Smith III sought to create a living Zion, and, to this end, Lamoni was selected for the grand experiment because of its rich soil and sparse settlement. It was the only town ever founded by the sect, and between 1870 and 1890 reigned as RLDS headquarters, becoming home to Smith III and the legendary Herald Publishing House. Bound in dark green cloth-covered wrappers embossed with cherubs and botanical elements. Includes two engravings and six photos, among these Smith III's house and the Herald Publishing House. 29 numbered pages plus unnumbered engraving and 4 pages of ads. Ads also appear inside front and back panels. Also includes an 8-page booklet of ads laid in with Park Addition ad to front panel. 6 3/8" x 4 7/8". Complete as issued. Conforms to Flake 4013a. Rare. First and only known edition. Two copies only in WorldCat library database. Tight, unmarked copy with light shelf wear and faint creases to front and back panels. Small areas of loss to corners of first and last leaves, not affecting text. Internals moderately age toned. Odor free. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly.

29pp. Sextodecimo [16.5 cm] in deep green cloth-covered wraps with a fully embossed decorative design of cherubs and floral scrolls, title in gilt on front wrap. Spine lightly chipped at tips, extremities rubbed, else very light wear; occasional light foxing to interior; slight musty scent. A brief history and promotion of the town that was at the time the headquarters of the RLDS Church (now Community of Christ). Two engravings and six B&W photographs. Flake 4013a. With three pieces of supplemental material described below. From the conclusion- "Missionaries and ministers whose labors call them away from their families the greater part of the time, will find Lamoni an excellent place to establish a home. Here they will have good church and school privileges, in a quiet location, away from saloon, gambling places, and evils of like nature. They will find the majority of the inhabitants to be sober, temperate, and religious people, trying to live according to their profession, and zealously defending what they believe to be right. While Lamoni is away from the cities and the many evils and temptations in them, it has railroad facilities by which all necessary business with other localities can be transacted." Also included: [Local Advertising Pamphlet]. 12-page pamphlet (composed of three folded leaves) of advertisements from local businesses, issued as an accompaniment to Lamoni Illustrated. 12 cm x 16.5 cm. Some flourishes in light blue pencil to front cover. Why Not Buy a Home in Lamoni? Advertising leaflet formed of a single folded sheet printed on both sides in pale blue ink. Image of Graceland College on rear cover. 8 cm x 14.5 cm closed. Creased to one corner, light chipping and a few short tears. Park Addition. Small folding lot map of new residential development. 19.5 cm x 27 cm unfolded. Short tears to a few of the folds. Crisp and clean. Supplemental material not in Flake.
