From the Foreword: My original plan was to show the ferment of the theatre in all its phases: rehearsals, sets, directi…ng, performances, etc. But before the first prints were dry, the wheels had turned, and the pictures were bereft of meaning. For the wheels of the theatre turn with breathtaking speed, and today's creation - and our interest in it - is quickly gone, never to return. But the people persist. So this book is dedicated to the people who make the theatre: to the actors. Again and again they don their masks, hoping to captivate the audience. In these pages, each of the actors has the main role on the stage I have provided. Beneath the many layers of make-up, I looked for the expression of individuality. I beguiled them this time into interpreting words of their own, rather than others'; and so, on the pages facing the portrait, they wrote - revealing or concealing some small facet of their personality. Though it may be that this too is but a different guise, another mask. --Peter Merom.
