Five extra-illustrated first edition volumes of Peter Muilman's impressively illustrated study of the history of Essex from the 'earliest era' to the time of publication. The scarce first edition of this work. Present here are five volumes only of the six volume first edition. Lacking volume II only. This is an extra-illustrated set, with 121 plates across the five volumes present. The complete six volume set only calls for 54 plates. ESTC T145690 With the inscription of Georgiana Cole, Langford 1834 to each front pastedown. A fascinating history of Essex from 'the earliest era down to 1769', discussing the notable events that have taken place in the region throughout history. In a contemporary full calf binding, with gilt detailing to back strip and board perimeters. Front boards of volume I and V detached but present. Rear joint of volume I, volume III front joint, volume IV joint heads and volume VI joints starting but firmly held. Text blocks of volume IV split at back strip. Inscriptions to front pastedowns. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with light spotting and the odd handling mark. Blanks bound in throughout each volume. Fair. book.

Internally, early previous owners name, additions in early hand to sheriff's list, some light persistant dust,dirt,fox marking, some plates are repaired. Generally pages and plates in good condition.
