Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. First Edition. [nice clean book with minor shelfwear only; the jacket is sun-browned along the spine, with a couple of tiny holes at the front hinge, teensy bits of paper loss at several corners]. Novel about three college students and their "turbulent world of first passions," with a Rashomon-y narrative structure, the same story being told from the p.o.v. of each. The title character, Miri, is "a girl whose parents perished in Greece during the war [and] has been brought to America by a rich uncle, a Greek immigrant spectacularly successful in the shipping business" (and whose prodigal son is one of the other students). The jacket blurb states that "the Greek-American milieu, with its masterful men, its submissive women, the closeness of its family ties and the warmth of its atmosphere, is brilliantly brought to life." The first novel by this Greek-American author, who went on to become a prominent academic and critic. ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." Condition: Gut. Taschenbucherstausgabe. 182 (10) Seiten. 18 cm. Umschlag: Haimo Lauth. Guter Zustand. A story of three young people and a first emotional experience is also shared in the telling by Miri, who has just come from Greece, Lexy- her cousin, and Josh Bigelow-Lexy's roommate at college. So that the narrative- in three parts-hot only this period of about a year but also the at first casual, and then increasingly intense progression of their feelings for each other- and particularly of Miri's attraction to Lexy. For while Josh offers Miri a gentle devotion, it is Lexy who afire stronger feelings- Lexy who is offhand, arrogant, volatile and who cultivates an aura of wickedness since he has run away from home, gambles, and boasts of other worldly indulgences. The sequence ends as they all return to college and Miri, knowing that Lexy will grow away from her, gives him up. A first novel presumably, this has an unassuming sincerity and a differentiated setting in its Greek-American background. Aus: KIRKUS REVIEW. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 150 Taschenbuch.
