Presenting the first book in English to celebrate the little known woven art of Scandinavia. Full colour plates of rare examples of indigenous tapestry designs all of which display an astonishing variety of patterns- geometric, floral, and figurative- woven in glowing natural dyes. For this book, SwedenÆs leading dealer in oriental rugs conducted a detailed study of these textiles and carried out extensive field research throughout the province of Sk?ne, the most prolific weaving area during the 18th and 19th centuries in Sweden. , English, Year1984, Illust. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. 1993. [49pp]. Colour images. "The ambition of this exhibition and catalogue is to set the Hamadân carpet in its rightful place as one of the finest weaving areas in Persia. For a long time most people have scorned when Hamadâns came under discussion, claiming that they were not of the same artistic merit as other famous rugregions. I hope this exhibition will change that. ? Our other goal is to inform the public of all the different villages and districts that together make up the Hamadân province. Somewhere between 600-800 villages constitute the area. Of course, we will never be able to differentiate between them all, but we can conclude the main characteristics of the various districts and the most important villages. Since virtually all these rugs have the same weaving technique i.e. symmetric knots and a single shoot of wefts, the relative difference in knot density, weft, colour, spin and ply of the foundation, height of pile, wooltype etc. becomes very important. For that reason we have chosen to illustrate the reverse side of all 43 pieces as well as making complete technical analysis'. Small pointers in the general description should also assist the reader in roughly deciding where a Hamadân originates from. ? So far, most of these rugs have simply been given the name Hamadân and we think it fair that they are not given their proper name. In Hamadân town itself, rugs were not produced until 1912 when Cecil Edwards (see Bibl.) assisted in setting up the specifications for how such a rug should be constructed. The rugs were given the name Alvând after the mountain just outside Hamadân. These pieces have nothing to do with the village production. They resemble coarse Sarouks in style - are double wefted, have alternatively depressed warps and have symmetric knots in densities 150-200.000/m? With these words, let us cast ourselves into the intriguing world that these "primitive" pieces constitute. And let us hope that in the future we may read in books and catalogues entries such as "magnificent antique Enjilâs", "superb semiantique Chenar" and "wonderful Kalajük rug". Book in excellent condition. No inscriptions.

This exhibition draws from the 600 to 800 villages that constitute one of the finest weaving areas in Persia. Though they cannot differentiate between them all, this book does explain the main characteristics of the various districts and the most important villages. Since virtually all these rugs have the same weaving technique, i.e. symmetric knots and a single shoot of wefts, the other details become increasingly important. For this reason, this book illustrates the reverse side of all 43 pieces as well as complete technical analyses of each. This in-depth presentation of the impressive workmanship involved in creating these exquisite rugs will hopefully challenge the earlier assumptions of HamadanÆs limited artistic merit and instead, celebrate these weavers as wondrously talented artists in their own right. , English, Year1993, Illust. Including 122 flatweaves from five different continents, this exhibition focuses on the kilim, a type of Oriental flatweave rug. Early in the 1900s, they were used mostly as drapes and covers, and they often adorned the walls of mensÆ smoking rooms and studies. These rugs went out of fashion, however, until they became popular again in the late 1980s because of their inclusion in certain decorator magazines. Today, kilims as art can be subdivided into naturalistic, constructivistic, or abstract forms. This book depicts each of these rugs in large, color illustrations, and it also includes descriptions of the symbols, patterns, and techniques used in each rug as well as commentaries on their functions in the societies from which they originated. , English/ Swedish, Year1992, Illust. Publisher's blue cloth, pictorial dustjacket. Very fine. Inscribed by the author. Stockholm, J. P. Willborg, 2002. 4to. 29,5 x 24 cms. 404 pp. Richly illustrated in colour throughout. With an introduction about weaving techniques and four sections covering Nomads, the Feridan area, Chahar Mahal province, and carpet types (zighlar, khersak, gilim). "Chahar Mahal va Bakhtiari provides an in-depth study of the traditional weavings of the Bakhtiari nomads and the settled peoples of the Chahar Mahal and Feridan regions in western Iran, both as sophisticated works of art and symbols of a disappearing, pre-industrial way of life. The captivating beauty of these weavings is the work of highly skilled dyers and weavers, who used the fine local wool and dyes to create characteristic warm, glowing colours transformed into a wealth of imaginative traditional designs. Based on extensive field studies, comparative research, as well as technical and design analysis, the author presents rugs and carpets from some eighty villages. The book includes many wonderful and previously unpublished pieces, such as the oldest known Bakhtiari and a number of the so-called Great Khan carpets. Other weavings that were essential to the nomadic lifestyle include saddle and storage bags, tent bands, bedding and even a cow cover for very special animals. Each village is individually discussed and there are chapters on weaving types and techniques, plus a full structural analysis. With over 500 colour and b/w illustrations and 2 maps. This book is published to coincide with 'The Colours and People of Bakhtiari', a major exhibition of the best old weavings from the Bakhtiari province, on view at Jakobsgatan 10, Gallerian, Stockholm, from 11 October to 13 November 2002".
