Reisen im Orient, Ausgabe in 2 Bänden, Erster und Zweiter Band komplett, Mit einem Frontispiz und einer schönen teilkolorierten Faltkarte, gesamt 408/472 Seiten Das Buch wurde vermutlich in den 50iger Jahren fachgerecht neu gebunden wirklich guter Zustand einzelne Seiten leicht fleckig Format 23cm x 15cm Das Buch schildert Verlauf und Erkundungen der Orientreise, des deutschen Orientalisten Julius Heinrich Petermann 1852-1855 nach Syrien, Libanon, Irak und Persien . Petermann reiste von Konstantinopel nach Damaskus, wo er sich mehrere Monate aufhielt bevor weiter nach Jerusalem reiste. Über den Libanon und er ging nach Beirút, bereist reiste nach Cilicien und Cypern. Zurück in Beirut bereiste er den Irak Stationen der Reise waren Haleb, Süerek, und über Maredin nach Mosul, Bagdâd und Sûq esch Schiuch. Eine weitere Expedition führte Petermann nach Persien Stationen hier Persepolis und Murghâb, Jesd und Ispahân. Von dort kehrte er wieder nach Háleb und über Beirút nach Alexandrien und Kairo. Petermann promovierte 1829 über das Targum Jonathan zum Pentateuch in Berlin. Zwischen 1830 und 1837 war er Privatdozent, ab 1837 außerordentlicher Professor für Orientalische Philologie in Berlin an der Universität. Johann Gottfried Wetzstein, Konsul in Damaskus und der preussische König unterstützten von 1852 bis 1855 Reisen nach Syrien, Mesopotamien und Persien. 1868 bis 1869 war er Konsul in Jerusalem. Er lernte Armenisch bei einem Mechitharistenpater Eduard auf der Insel San Lazzaro, die zu Venedig gehört. In seiner Grammatica linguae Armeniacae konnte er beweisen, dass das Armenische zu den indogermanischen Sprachen gehört. Er schrieb über die armenische Kultur wie über die Musik der Armenier 1851 und über deren Geschichte 1866. Petermann interessierte sich für religiöse Minderheiten wie die Samaritaner, Drusen, Mandäer, Jesiden, Parsen und Ahl-e Haqq. Auskünfte über diese Gruppen gibt sein zweibändiger Reisebericht Reisen im Orient. Zu den Samaritanern und Mandäern leistete er Pionierarbeit. (biog. 408/472 Deutsch 1400g.
