Small quarto, pp [x - including an engraved bordered dedication page], 385, lacking pages 197-208, rather age-toned, a water stain throughout which is heavier and covering more of the early pages, gradually fading after the first third of the book until almost i…mperceptible latterly, a small hole in the title page leading to loss of one letter; with many attractive small square woodcuts throughout, rebound in a twentieth century simple full calf (by Theo Merrett ), the original front endpaper laid down and with the original spine laid down also. The Hartland Library copy, with labels and manuscript notes attached to the front endpapers. RARE. The Library was formed by Edwin Sydney Hartland, and was a diverse, but major, collection of herbals, archaeology and anthropology. It was donated to Gloucestershire County Council in 1936, and was eventually dispersed around 2010. [Crescenzi was born of a good family in Bologna, Italy. He studied logic, natural history, medicine and law in the University of Bologna, and became a lawyer and writer. Tired of law practice he decided to write about agricultural matters. His book entitled Ruralia Commoda contained much information relative to domestic plants and animals. The books is considered to be the best medieval treatise on agriculture (about 1306). It was very popular in continental Europe, was translated into several European languages and it exists in a large number of manuscripts. It was likewise printed many times. The book was composed with the purpose of providing the intelligent farmer with a practical account of all aspects of farming. It included material concerning plant growth, extracted from the work of Albertus Magnus as well as the arrangement of farm buildings and water supply. Among the subjects treated were: Cultivation of cereals, peas and beans. Cultivation of grapes and making of wines. Cultivation of fruit trees, vegetables, medicinal plants and flowers. Care of woods. His most original writing involved an elaborate presentation of grafting of grapes, trees and the insect larvae destroying plants. he quoted Palladius, Columella, as well as other ancient authorities.].

Im Bereich des Wassers zahlreiche Kompassrosen mit Rumben. - Eine Karte dieser Art wird Wattenkarte genannt, da sie zwar Seezeichen aufgeführt hat, aber keinerlei Wassertiefen, was dann eine Seekarte wäre. - Pieter Schenk, 1645 - 1715, Gerard Valk, 1651 - 1726, beide Kupferstecher und Verleger in Amsterdam. - Das Papier leicht gebräunt, am unteren Blattrand leicht wasserfleckig. Bei der unteren Karte leichte Einrisse in den Bereichen des grünen Altkolorits.

Eccellente il dettaglio dei Caraibi. Esistono 4 stati della carta:1680 senza privilegi, 1682 "Cum Privelegio Ordinum Hollandiae et Westfrisiae", 1708 con aggiunta del reticolo cartografico e 1720 con l'aggiunta del nome di Peter Schenk Junior nel cartiglio superiore.

It is taken from the most famous celestial atlas ever published, 'Atlas Coelestis Seu Harmonia Macrocosmica.' by Cellarius, first published by Janssonius in 1660, without the numbering of the plates in the lower right-hand corner, and reprinted by the publishers Valk and Schenk in the early 18th century. The 'Harmonia' was first published as a supplementary volume to Janssonius' Atlas Novus. The work graphically expounds in 29 plates the various theories on the universe of Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe, Copernicus, reproduces phases of the moon orbits of planets and the constellations of the celestial vault. Fine specimen with good margins, reinforced at the end of the central fold: external ornamental motifs in later colouring. Andrea Cellario was born in 1596 in Neuhausen and was educated in Heidelberg. At the beginning of the 17th century he emigrated to Holland and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he became rector of the Latin School. Cellarius' best-known work is his Harmonia Macrocosmica, first published in 1660 by Jan Jansson as a supplement to Jansson's Atlas Novus. The work consists of a series of celestial charts begun by Cellarius in 1647 and intended to be part of a two-volume treatise on cosmography, which was never published. Cellarius' maps are the most sought after of all celestial maps, as they fuse the evocative images of the golden age of Dutch cartography with contemporary scientific knowledge. The present specimen comes from the Valk & Schenk edition of Cellarius' atlas, unchanged from the 1661 edition. The 1660 and 1661 editions are distinguished by the inclusion of a plate number in the lower right corner of the 1661 edition.
