With the armorial bookplate of Samual George Smith. (See Mauquoy-Hendrickx , L'Iconographie D'Antoine Van Dyck, Catalogue raisonné, 2nd edition, vol. I pp. 44-45). Complete and extremely rare portrait album. Author Mauquoy states in her description that she could not find a complete copy. He is part of a family of engravers. Pieter I de Jode earned a living as a draughtsman, engraver and publisher. He was the publisher of certain prints of the Rubens graphic and was trained by Hendrik Goltzius. Condition: good, given age. Small margins. Tear above restored. Fold in middle. Some brown spots. Bound in contemporary full vellum, Vellum a bit soiled, a marginal stain on portraits 20 and 21 but on the whole very well preserved. According to Thieme & Becker the work was first issued in 1651 and consisted of a title page and 78 portraits. Later issues followed and contained more portraits. The work was begun by father Pieter de Jode (I) and continued by his son Pieter (II). The title page is signed ; '' E. Quellinus inv. P. de Iode fecit ''. All the portraits are signed in the plate by the engraver (except n° 7 , 8 , 37 , 63 and 78 which are unsigned) and some also by the portraitist ; Anton van Dyck, Caspar de Craeyer, Titian , Rubens, Cornelis Galle, C. de Vos, Otto Vaenius, Rucholle , Franciscus de Nys , Willeboorts Bossaerts , Coenraard Waumans.
