Das Verdikt der grossen italienischen Kom…mission ist in ganz entscheidender Weise zu seinen Gunsten ausgefallen [.]. [.] In grellem Widerspruch zu diesen für den weitaus grössten Theil der Schweiz erfreulichen Erscheinungen steht alles Dasjenige, was im Verlaufe der letzten Monate im Kanton Tessin geschehen ist [.]. Die nachfolgende Darstellung hat den Zweck, das Bild der bezüglichen Vorgänge im Kanton Tessin zu geben, wobei im Allgemeinen einiges Licht in diese ziemlich verworrenen Verhältnisse gebracht werden wird und im Besonderen auch diejenigen Entstellungen und Verdächtigungen, welche mit Beziehung auf diese Verhältnisse auf die Bahn gebracht worden sind, ihre Würdigung, und zwar zumeist durch die objektive Darstellung der Thatsachen, finden werden." (p. 3). - "Die 1871 in Luzern gegründete Gotthardbahngesellschaft realisierte bis 1882 die Nord-Süd-Verbindung durch die Alpen und damit den 15 km langen Gotthardtunnel. Das Projekt der Gotthardbahn tauchte Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts erstmals auf. Die von 15 Kantonen und zwei Bahngesellschaften 1863 gegründete Gotthardvereinigung, die von Alfred Escher präsidiert wurde, setzte sich nach langwierigen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den Regionen um verschiedene Alpenbahnvarianten durch, womit v.a. Zürich und die Schweizerische Nordostbahn (NOB) einen Sieg errungen hatten. Dank Eschers Vertrags- und Finanzierungspolitik schlossen die Schweiz, Deutschland und Italien einen Staatsvertrag über den Bau und Betrieb der Bahn ab. 1871 übertrug die Gotthardvereinigung ihre Rechte auf die von ihr gegründete Gotthardbahngesellschaft mit Sitz in Luzern. Nach der Ausschreibung erhielt der Genfer Ingenieur Louis Favre den Zuschlag für den Bau des Tunnels." (H.-P.
