Softcover. Condition: Near Fine. ART Exploration -"Pacific Encounters brings together for the first time many stunning Polynesian objects collected by voyagers and missionaries during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries." "Illustrated are over 270 items gathered from the major regions of Polynesia. Many are from the British Museum, which houses fine and rare material from the expeditions of Captain Cook, Captain Vancouver and members of the London Missionary Society. Ranging from massive images of gods to small fish hooks, they are discussed in the contexts of their local use and meanings, and their journeys to museums all over the world. These pieces have remarkable stories to tell of encounters between humans and their gods, between Polynesians and Europeans, their respective chiefs and priests, beliefs and technologies." Published to accompany the exhibition: Pacific encounters : art and divinity in Polynesia 1760-1860, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia, Norwich 21 May-13 August 2006. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Published by Hutchinson and Co Ltd in association with Christies in 1976, here is the ridiculously rare first hardback printing of Steven Phelps' ART AND ARTEFACTS of the Pacific, Africa and the Americas: THE JAMES HOOPER COLLECTION. Blue cloth binding, silver spine lettering, 487 pages including b/w glossy full-page plates and a few colour plates throughout, this stunning book is in good condition with some light rubbing/ minor bumping to the edges of the boards plus a pair of stamps for Calderdale Museum Services to the front and rear free end papers. The dust jacket is fair to good with some general top edge chipping and creasing culminating in a jagged tear approximately 35 mm in length to the top front right hand corner plus a few small tears at the top of the spine. The book is heavy and therefore additional postage MUST be applied to areas OUTSIDE the UK as follows: Europe £15 Rest of the World (excluding America) £20. Prospective USA customers should contact me in advance. Agolf Twittler, the Tangarine Tyrant and his ridiculous tarrifs mean that Royal Mail has currently paused all deliveries to the US.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. London, Hutchinson, 1976. Large quarto, 487 pages with numerous maps and 250 pages of plates plus 8 colour plates (illustrating a total of 1927 items). Cloth a little rubbed (chiefly to the head and foot of the spine); edges lightly marked; top margin of the free endpapers and first and last few leaves slightly cockled; minor surface adhesion residue near the gutter of the frontispiece and title page (touched up with some white correction fluid); trifling signs of age and use; a very good copy with the lightly worn dustwrapper. When the book was published, the collection, formed over a period of sixty years, was 'the least known and least published of the great collections made this century (Oldman, Beasley, Fuller and Hooper) and the last to remain in private hands. (Hooper's) particular love was for the works of Polynesia, this section being the finest private collection in existence'. The author is the grandson of James Hooper; the book is rare and still of importance.
