ISBN-13: 9781584774914; ISBN-10: 1584774916. Bliss, Philemon. Of Sovereignty. Originally published: Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1885. xv, 180 pp. Reprinted 2005, 2019 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584774914; ISBN-10: 1584774916. Hardcover. New. $34.95 * Of Sovereignty argues that the term "sovereignty" has lost its meaning and can only be based on justice and reason. In this fascinating book written in 1884, Bliss balances the argumentative excesses of both advocates of states' rights and of federal supremacy. To make his case, he examines the limitations on sovereignty in respect to private and public law, considers the right of secession and discusses the positions of Austin, Cooley and Lieber at length. After serving on the benches of the Dakota Territory and the Missouri Supreme Court, Bliss [1814-1889] finished his career as the first dean of the law department of the University of Missouri.
