Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the importance of religious education and the establishment of a theological seminary. It delves into the history of religious education, tracing its evolution from ancient times to the present day. The author argues that religious education is essential for the perpetuation and dissemination of virtuous principles and sound learning. The book examines the benefits of a theological seminary in providing a structured and comprehensive education for future clergy. It discusses the advantages of a seminary education, such as the development of critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of religious texts and traditions. The author highlights the importance of a well-educated clergy in promoting religious literacy, fostering interfaith dialogue, and contributing to the overall well-being of society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Pamphlet. Condition: Good. First Edition. Removed, no wrapper, 8 x 5 inches, 34 pages. "The following discourse was delivered before the Presbytery of New-Brunswick, at their meeting in Trenton, on the sixth day of October, 1818." Somewhat surprisingly, the author was met with much criticism, and, according to him, false representations of his discourse. He here offers it in print, unaltered, for all to judge. The text is Exodus 35:21 & 29, "And they came, every one whose heart was stirred up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the Lord's offering to the work of the tabernacle.&c."Philip Lindsly (1786-1855), b. Basking Ridge, New Jersey; d. Nashville, Tennessee. Lindsley graduated at the College of New Jersey (Princeton College), and in 1808 began teaching Latin and Greek in his alma mater. He rose in usefulness and became Professor Languages, Librarian, Dean, and secretary to the Board of Trustees. He was vice president of the college (1817-1822), and acting president (1822-1824). He declined the presidency of Princeton, and of several other colleges, settling as president of Cumberland College (now University of Nashville) in Nashville in 1824. He resigned in 1850, when a cholera epidemic led to low enrollment. His next taught at New Albany, Indiana, at the seminary which became McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. Lindsly was remembered as a rigorous and effective educator, as one who urged the formal education of public school teachers, and as one who advocated for the liberation of slaves.
