Wie kein anderer Maler seiner Zeit hat Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865-1926) unsere Vorstellung von Afrika geprägt. In seinen bestechend lebendigen Zeichnungen, Aquarellen und Gemälden erfasste er mit geradezu wissenschaftlicher Akribie das Charakteristische der Tiere und ihres Lebensraumes. Nicht ohne Grund illustrieren seine Darstellungen einerseits Nachschlagewerke wie Brehms Tierleben und zierten andererseits die populären Sammelbilder des Schokoladenherstellers Stollwerck. Der Band zeichnet ein umfassendes, spannendes Porträt von Kuhnerts außergewöhnlichem Leben und Werk und berücksichtigt dabei auch die aktuelle Debatte über den Umgang mit der kolonialen Vergangenheit Deutschlands.
