Howe "To my friend Bev Howe whom I admire so much and who is himself an orator of renown" and on paste down the book plate of Mr. Howe with a notation about the books acquisition dated 9/22/39. Mr. Howe was both a distinguished lawyer and humorist in demand for public speaking in the mid west that era. At upper portion of title page is stamped name of perhaps the original owner; his name, with address and date of 1869, is repeated on next page, a t.p. introducing the speeches of Charles Phillipss, written in sepia ink that has bled into adjoining pages. Preface by John Finlay. Paper is foxed and darkened by age in places, but of such good quality it is still strong. Two tiny closed tears, one at front end page margin and the other at back end page margin. Gutters are cracked and back board is detached but volume is square and text block intact and tight. Leather boards with raised bands on spine are much bumped and scuffed and lettering has been worn away. Subtitle: "To Which Is Added The Powerful Appeal Of Robert Emmett, At The Close Of His Trial for High Treason Selected By A Member Of The Bar.".
