Entered at Stationer's Hall, All Rights Reserved. Features a preface to the third edition by Robert S. Ball; and, a new preface to this edition by Theodore E. R. Phillip…s. Custom contemporary prize binding with navy morocco (leather) boards or similar, gilt embossed spine titles, five raised ribs, gilt ruled borders, moderate edge wear, rub, some bow. Front board features maritime emblem and insignia in gilt: "The Incorporated Thames Nautical Training College;" surrounded by motto: "Union is Strength" and below: "H. M. S. Worcester". Design features sailing vessel at center surrrounded by Crown with Maltese Cross, several Union Jacks at sides, rolling scrolls, fleur-de-lis, etc. Thick heavy stock leaves very good. Thick lightly colored marbled endpapers. Dark blue prize plate inside cover: "Presented to 'J. B. Newcombe, for Mathematics and Navigation,' Third Nautical, Summer 1927". Gilded text block at all sides. Book design begins with text, then the plates, followed by a fourteen-page detailed index. Bind good, intact. Near very good rarity of fine book craftsmanship. The 86 plates tipped onto bound in guards. Few tissue guards w/varying wear, crease. Plates consist of representations of the solar system and star maps. Some in richly subdued color.
