Die Autorin zeigt in ihrer Analyse die Zusammenhänge zwischen Koeppens Erfahrungen im Krieg, seiner Zeitkritik und den Friedensvorstellungen aus früheren und modernen Utopien. Die Romane befassen sich mit Deutschland vor und nach dem Jahr 1945, berichten sowohl vom Zweiten Weltkrieg als auch vom Ost-West-Konflikt. Aus Koeppens Auseinandersetzung mit der Zukunft resultiert eine Vision des atomaren Krieges. Der nach den zwei Weltkriegen durch Existenzphilosophen verbreitete Pessimismus und die damit zusammenhängende Angst vor einem 'Dritten Weltkrieg' schlugen sich in Koeppens Nachkriegsromanen nieder. Philipp, Keetenheuve und Siegfried sind pessimistische Protagonisten. Ihre Vorstellungen enthalten Furchtbilder, die die Wirklichkeit treu wiedergeben und darüber hinaus überzeichnen. Ihre Erinnerungen an den Zweiten Weltkrieg verschmelzen mit ihrer Wahrnehmung von der Gegenwart zu einer einzigen Vision der Endzeit. Sie sehen Deutschland als ein restauriertes 'Drittes Reich', das mit der ganzen Zivilisation untergeht. Die Utopie, deren Vermittler Philipp, Keetenheuve und Siegfried sind, folgt aus dem Pessimismus der Protagonisten. Die Ursachen für diesen Pessimismus liegen nicht nur in der Vergangenheit, sondern auch in der Gegenwart der Figuren. Mit der negativen Gestaltung der eigenen 'Helden' weicht Wolfgang Koeppen deutlich von der klassischen Utopie ab, stellt darüber hinaus einen Kontrast zwischen den gewà hnlichen Nachkriegsutopien und seinem Entwurf her. Philipp, Keetenheuve und Siegfried sind offenbar keine messianischen Gestalten, wie dies in den Nachkriegsutopien überwiegend der Fall ist. Sie sind tadelhafte 'Helden', die mit dem Glauben leben, daà sowohl ihre Gesellschaft als auch sie selbst zum Scheitern verurteilt sind. Aufgrund dessen sind ihr Nonkonformismus und ihre Utopie hoffnungslos. Koeppen selbst war ein hoffnungsloser Nonkonformist. Beweise dafür sind seine literarisch-ästhetische Orientierung und seine individuelle Entwicklung. Koeppen stand zwischen Tradition und Moderne und scheiterte in seinem Versuch, eine neue Sprache zu erfinden. Für relevant in Koeppens Trilogie hält die Verfasserin die warnende Funktion, die seine radikal pazifistischen 'Helden' erfüllen. Sie zeigen soziale und politische Konflikte und das damit zusammenhängende Scheitern der Friedensutopie als Folge der machtpolitischen Realität und des Versagens der Pazifisten. Der Zweite Weltkrieg und der 'Kalte Krieg' haben in der Trilogie radikale Pazifisten und Propheten eines 'Dritten Weltkrieges' hervorgebracht, dies zu einer Zeit, in der neben der Debatte über den von Friedensforschern angekündigten atomaren 'Dritten Weltkrieg' u.a. die These einer 'nuklearen Abschreckung' als einzige Mà glichkeit zur Erhaltung des Weltfriedens vertreten und diskutiert wurde.
