Este escrito tiene una gran importancia por dos razones: al ser el comentario griego más antiguo, ayuda a establecer el texto del Apocalipsis y es, además, un buen ejemplo de cómo se aplicaban en el siglo vi los métodos de interpretación bíblica a uno de los libros más difíciles del Nuevo Testamento. A pesar de la importancia y de la originalidad de este libro, la personalidad de Ecumenio permanece en una discreta penumbra.
