Hardcover. Condition: Good. Elva Paulson (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. 40 pages plus endpapers. Illustrations on most pages. Decorative cover protected by a clear plastic wrap. Signed by author on title page. This appears to be focused on Alaska and addresses fishing there. We were initially unable to develop information on the author. However, we have subsequently been provided with information which is presented in the comment section below. Elva Hamerstrom Paulson is the daughter of naturalist, Ornithologist and Writer, Frances Hamerstrom. Like her predecessor, the artist shares a heritage of pride in her knowledge of natural history and a not-overly-sentimental commitment to preservation. In addition to the pen & ink scratchboard drawings the artist also works in different media. Elva Paulson works primarily in pen and ink, as well as watercolor. In addition to being an artist, Elva is also a writer. Although she holds an address in Roseburg, Oregon, Elva is often away from home. She and her husband, an accomplished Wildlife Photographer, spend a great deal of time photographing, sketching and tracking wildlife in Yellowstone National Park and throughout the State of Oregon; and they make an extended annual visit to the Hamerstrom family home in Wisconsin. Additional information about Phyllis Lesher: According to the 1940 U.S. census, Phyllis was born around 1913. In 1940 she would have been 27. She was married to Charles R. Lesher. They had two sons at that time. The first was Robert Roy Lesher, age 8, and Phillip C. Lesher, age 2. In 1940 the Leshers lived in Juneau, Alaska. Charles was about 10 years older than Phyllis. In 1966 in Alaska, the Leshers had a commercial fishing boat, possibly named Sea Quail.(Pacific Northwest Quarterly - Volumes 58-59 - Page 212). Her maiden name of may have been Trowbridge. She came from an Alaskan pioneer family. Phyllis is listed along with many other parties under a 1989 environmental document. It looks like she was part of a movement for environmental advocacy. (Press Woman - Volume 46 - Page 8). Phyllis is listed on page 9 of "One Hundred Years Of Alaska Poetry", by the Poetry Society of Alaska 1966. She must be a contributing poet. It was published by Big Mountain Press. The Alaska Journal, Vol. 1-2, 1971 mentions she wrote a second book of Alaska haikus. Phyllis also authored "Intimately Oregon", which came out in 1980, and was published by Lincoln City Art Guild. It was also illustrated by Elva Hamerstrom Paulson, and apparently also by Doreen Gandy Wiley. It is a book of haikus. Her poems are part of a 20 page anthology of poetry from 1968, entitled " Sojourn Among Strangers - A Collection of Poems, Vol. 2 - 16. It was published by Olivant Press. Apparently Phyllis's death was documented by another writer around 1983, when Phyllis would have been about age 70.
