Contact seller3-star sellerVery good. Some toning and wear along original centerfold. Minor foxing. Original platemark visible. Size 12 x 16.5 Inches. An attractive example of Rigobert Bonne's 1771 decorative map of the French regions of Picardy, Artois, and French Flanders. Covers the region in full from the English Chanel to Normandy. Artois was a forme…r province located in the northwestern part of France, bordering Belgium on the north and Picardy to the south. This roughly corresponds to the modern department of Pas-de-Calais, and includes the prominent cities of Arras, Saint-Omer, Lens and Bethune. The region of Picardy is famous for the production of Maroilles, a popular French cow's milk cheese. This cheese is produced in rectangular blocks with a moist orange-red washed rind and a strong, distinct odor. The cathedral of Cambrai (the city of Cambrai is identified in this map), in the department of Nord is famous for the composers it employed in the 15th and 16th centuries. Among them were Philippe de Monte, Johannes Lupi, Ockeghem and others. A large decorative title cartouche appears in the upper right quadrant. Drawn by R. Bonne in 1771 for issue as plate no. This is an attractive 1790 map of the Picardy region in northern France by the French cartographer Louis Brion de la Tour. Covers the French departments of Aisne, Oise, Somme and Pas-de-Calais. Color coding divides the map according to region… and notes numerous towns, cities, rivers, forests, mountains and other topographical features. The region of Picardy is famous for the production of Maroilles family of cheeses. These include the Gris de Lille (Pas-de-Calais), Guerbigny (Picardy), and Rollot (Somme). Contact seller4-star sellerExcellent. Few specks; early manuscript underlining of some placenames. Else fine with beautiful original color. Size 13 x 20 Inches. A beautiful example, in superb original color, of Abraham Ortelius' 1579 map of Picardy, the first map of that area in an atlas. The map focuses on the Somme River valley. Amiens, chief city of th…e region, St. Quentin and La Fere are given particular emphasis. Ortelius' cartouche and scales are embellished with elegant strapwork frames. This specific example is from a 1595 edition of the atlas, and is radiant with the hand color of that period. The Source Ortelius was a keen surveyor of cartographic sources, in this case sourcing his cartography from an unpublished 1557 map by Jean de Surhon. De Surhon produced his map the year in which Picardy was invaded by Habsburg forces under the command of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy during the so-called Italian War between France and the Holy Roman Empire. The campaigns in Picardy would be marked by pronounced Habsburg victories, in particular that of the Battle of Saint-Quentin. Therefore at the time Surhon's map was produced, Picardy was not so much part of France (Gallia) as it was part of The Habsburg Netherlands (Belgica). The 1559 Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis, would return St. Quentin and the lands of the Somme to the French. The title of this map, characterizing Picardy as ' Belgicae regionis ,' suggests that either Ortelius appears to have not considered this either a correct or permanent state of affairs. The present example is the second state of the map, which is distinct from the 1579 first state by the presence of a number of changes, most notable in the correction in the course of the river Évoissons (flowing into Amiens from the southwest, just to the upper right hand of the cartouche) including the addition of several cities, such as Contre and Fleury. These changes were made sometime between 1584 and 1587; at some point after the 1579 publication of the first issue of this map, errors in Surhon's mapping were brought to Ortelius' attention, and amended. Publication History and Census This map was engraved and first added to the Ortelius Atlas in 1579. The present example conforms typographically to the 1595 Latin edition of the work. This map is well represented in institutional collections and appears on the market from time to time. References: Rumsey 10001.125 (1608). van den Broecke Ortelius Atlas Maps, Ort 46, State 2. Contact seller3-star sellerVery good condition. Lightly but evenly toned. Sharp, even strike and rich original color. Size 15 x 20.75 Inches. This is Willem Blaeu's map of Picardy, easily the most entertaining map ever produced of this region of northern France. The map focuses on the Somme River valley. Amiens, chief city of the region, St. Quentin and L…a Fere are given particular emphasis. Putti bear a superb coat of arms with Fleurs-de-lis aloft in the upper right, and the scales are presented in a strapwork frame. The beautifully engraved title cartouche deserves a description unto itself. The Farmer and His Wife The map's title cartouche is graced with an astonishingly homely and evocative scene. It is flanked by a farmer and a woman who, by her expression of pointed anger, can only be his wife. Sickle in hand, she glares at him while he peers at the reader under furrowed brows. This writer's spouse was alarmingly quick to assess the scene: 'He didn't do what he was supposed to do with the wheat, and she's annoyed because now she has to do it.' While the story told in this vignette appears to be plain enough, its context here is obscure. Why are this woebegone husband and his infuriated wife being associated with Picardy? There are many folk tales playing variations on the theme of The Farmer and His Wife - is there a specific one being alluded to? It would not be the only time a sly allusion to the politics of a region would be slipped into the decorations of a map. It may be a simple jibe by sophisticated Amsterdammers at the expense of the rustic denizens of a contested borderland. The Source The cartography itself is not innovative: Blaeu's map is a faithful reproduction of Jean de Surhon's 1557 map, as presented in Abraham Ortelius' 1579 Theatrum Orbis Terrarum . Both great atlas makers were keener surveyors of cartographic sources, than of the lands themselves. Belgica not Gallia Jean de Surhon produced his map in 1557, the year in which Picardy was invaded by Habsburg forces under the command of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy during the so-called Italian War between France and the Holy Roman Empire. The campaigns in Picardy would be marked by pronounced Habsburg victories, in particular that of the The Battle of Saint-Quentin of 1557. Therefore at the time Surhon's map was produced, Picardy was not so much part of France (Gallia) as it was part of The Habsburg Netherlands (Belgica.) The 1559 Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis, however, would return St. Quentin and the lands of the Somme to the French - hence the French coat of arms decorating the map. Publication History and Census This map first appeared in Blaeu's Atlas Novus in 1635, continuing to appear in that work until it was replaced by Joan Blaeu's updated - yet relatively charmless - map for his Atlas Maior . This example appeared in one of the Latin editions of Atlas Novus , between 1644 and 1655. There are about fifteen examples of the separate map cataloged in institutional collections.
